Top Tips for Swim Parents

Encouragement and Support

  • Be encouraging, supportive, and enthusiastic. Show your child that you value their effort and commitment more than results.

Be a Role Model

  • Demonstrate positive behaviour to your child, other young swimmers, and fellow parents. Your attitude sets the tone for the team environment.

Trust the Coaches

  • Allow the coaches to coach. Avoid trying to take on too many roles—support your child by trusting the professionals guiding them.

Focus Beyond Winning

  • Celebrate progress and effort rather than outcomes. Let your child know you’re proud of them regardless of results.

Foster Independence

  • Encourage independence and personal responsibility. Allow your child to problem-solve and make their own decisions both in and out of the pool.

Respect Their Ambitions

  • Support and respect your child’s goals in sport. Remember, it’s their experience—not yours.

Listen and Be Patient

  • Offer advice only when asked, and be impartial. Listening helps your child feel understood and supported.

Develop the Whole Person

  • Swimming is just one part of their growth. Encourage a balance of experiences that build character and confidence.

Collaborate with Coaches and Staff

  • Work together with the coaching team to create a positive environment where your child can thrive.

Let Them Have Fun

  • Above all, allow your child to be themselves and enjoy the journey. Fun and friendship are the foundation of lifelong participation.
