Masters Squad

Masters swimming is open to swimmers aged 18+ and, at Newark we have a wide variety of swimmers including former competitive swimmers, triathletes and swimmers who’ve picked up the sport later in life.
A lot of Masters swimmers have also had a bit of a break since they last trained, so we always aim to gradually integrate them back into training. So don’t worry if you’ve had a bit of time out – we’ll support you in getting started again.

Sessions will cover all 4 strokes, but there is a degree of flexibility, especially around any injuries or niggles. Depending on ability the sessions will normally cover an average of 2000-2500m per hour. Some sessions are lighter and others are more intense depending on the day and any upcoming competitions.
Testimonial: "I swam competitively from the age of nine, and went to Nationals when I was 13 and 14 but after an injury at 16 and the pressures of university, I eventually walked away from the pool. When I moved to the area four years ago, I felt a void where swimming used to be. Joining Newark three years ago was a total breath of fresh air.Getting back into the water was daunting at first, but the environment here is special. I didn’t just find my stroke again, I have also made friends for life. With the club's support, I even rediscovered my competitive edge, culminating in a 3rd place finish at the 2025 British Nationals in London. Newark Swimming club has allowed me to regain my passion for swimming." Liv H

Introduction to Masters Squad
At 20:15 – 21:00 on Wednesday nights our ‘Introduction to Masters Swimming’ Squad train. This small relaxed group covers competitive skills such as starts and turns as well as developing technique and efficiency for all four strokes. It’s the perfect way back into the sport after some time away or to take your swimming to the next level.
To join this squad, swimmers need to be able to complete a minimum of 200m of any stroke. It would be beneficial to also be able to complete 100m Frontcrawl, with breathing to the side, and 50m of at least 2 other strokes.
Testimonial: “I walked away from serious swimming in my 20’s—career, kids, life just took over. Fast-forward twenty-five years: out of shape, and honestly a little scared to even try again. I started with slow laps at the local pool, rebuilt my confidence but then joined Newark Swimming Club. With Adam’s encouragement and appropriate sets, I am now feeling stronger than ever and have started competing once again and achieving results I didn’t think possible.” Caroline
Competing
The same as the rest of the club, the is no expectation to compete, but there are plenty of opportunities. Masters competitions are divided into 5 year age brackets starting with 25-29, 30-34, 35-39 and so on, with an 18-24 ‘Seniors’ Category too. There’s also the opportunity for relay entries as well.
As a club we target a few competitions per year where we go as a squad, but there are a number of other competitions available.
