Becoming a J1 Swimming Official

Are you ready to take an active role in the sport? Becoming a J1 (Judge Level 1) Trainee is the perfect entry point into swimming officiating. As a J1 trainee, you’ll learn the ropes of technical judging while gaining real poolside experience in a supportive, mentor-led environment. It’s an ideal opportunity for parents, former swimmers, coaches, teachers, and swimming enthusiasts to give back and stay involved in competitive swimming.

What is a J1 Trainee?

A J1 Trainee is someone working towards full J1 qualification. You’ll train to become a Stroke & Turn Judge, responsible for observing swimmers to ensure they follow the correct stroke, turn, and finish rules. Trainees play a vital supporting role at club galas and beginner competitions while building confidence under the guidance of experienced officials.

Your Step-by-Step Journey as a J1 Trainee

The J1 training pathway is practical, flexible, and designed to build your skills gradually:

  1. Getting Started

    • Be at least 15 years old (age requirements may vary slightly by region).
    • Join your local swimming club and the relevant national federation (e.g., Swim England).
    • Complete any necessary safeguarding and background checks.
  2. Complete the J1 Theory Course Study the official swimming rules through a self-paced online J1 Theory module. You’ll learn FINA technical rules for all four strokes, turns, finishes, and the core responsibilities of a Stroke & Turn Judge. The course ends with an assessment — once passed, you receive your theory certificate and can begin practical training.

  3. Hands-On Practical Training (The Trainee Phase) This is where you truly develop as a J1 Trainee:

    • Shadowing experienced officials at club and regional meets.
    • Completing a structured training logbook — recording your observations, decisions, and feedback from mentors.
    • Gaining supervised experience in key areas: stroke judging, turn judging, finish judging, and timing.
    • Working a recommended number of poolside sessions (typically 15–20+ hours across multiple competitions).
    • Receiving constructive, one-to-one feedback from qualified mentors and assessors throughout your training.

Many trainees start at small club galas, where the atmosphere is friendly and supportive, allowing you to learn without pressure.

  4. Final Assessment & Qualification Once your logbook is fully completed and signed off by your mentors, you’ll undergo a final practical assessment. Successful trainees are awarded their full J1 licence.

The entire process is supportive — you’re never thrown in at the deep end. Mentors are there to guide you, answer questions, and help you grow in confidence.
