Becoming a J2 Swimming Official

J2 (Judge Level 2) is the natural progression from J1. As a J2 official, you take on greater responsibility and work at a higher standard, often at regional and county-level competitions.

What is a J2 Judge?

A fully qualified J2 Judge is an experienced technical official capable of working independently or leading small teams. You will be responsible for advanced stroke and turn judging, finish judging, and supporting the Referee in maintaining the integrity of the competition.

Your Responsibilities as a J2

  • Observing and judging complex stroke technique, turns, and finishes across all swimming strokes
  • Making confident, accurate decisions under pressure
  • Supporting and mentoring J1 trainees and Timekeepers
  • Working at a variety of meets, including club galas, regional leagues, and open competitions
  • Assisting with pre- and post-meet administration when required

Progression Pathway to J2

  1. Hold a current J1 Licence — You must have qualified and gained experience as a J1 Judge.
  2. Complete J2 Theory Training — Advanced rules and scenarios module.
  3. Practical Experience — Shadow and work alongside senior officials at higher-level meets.
  4. Logbook & Assessment — Complete the required number of observed sessions and pass a final practical assessment.

Requirements

  • Must have completed and be qualified as J1 (Judge Level 1)
  • Active involvement in officiating (recommended minimum meets per season)
  • Current Swim England membership and safeguarding certification
  • Commitment to continuing professional development
