What is a Timekeeper?

Timekeeper is the perfect entry-level role supporting your swimmers and club. It’s an accessible and essential position that gets you poolside quickly, helping competitions run smoothly while building your confidence. Timekeepers are responsible for accurately recording the official times of swimmers using stopwatches at the finish end of the pool. As a Timekeeper, you’ll work as part of a team with the support of the Chief Timekeeper.  Club galas and Mini meets are a great starting point — many helpers begin here before progressing to Judge Level 1 (Stroke & Turn) and even higher roles.

Your Step-by-Step Journey as a Timekeeper Trainee

The pathway to becoming a qualified Timekeeper is straightforward, practical, and beginner-friendly:

Getting Started

  • Minimum age is usually 14 years (check with your national body).
  • Register as a member of Swim England.

Complete the Online Theory Course Take a short, self-paced online Timekeeping course (typically around 1 hour).

You’ll learn:

  • How to use stopwatches effectively
  • Recording procedures and protocols
  • Duties of Timekeepers and Chief Timekeepers
  • Relevant rules and best practices for accuracy and fairness

Upon passing, you’ll receive your theory certificate.

Practical Training & Assessment Put your skills into action at real competitions:

  • Shadow experienced Timekeepers at club-level meets.
  • Complete a practical competence assessment (usually a simple checklist signed off during an event).
  • Demonstrate consistent, accurate timing under supervision.

This step can often be completed quickly at local galas in a supportive environment.

Certification Once your theory certificate and practical assessment are uploaded (usually via the national officials portal), you’ll be officially qualified as a Timekeeper. You can then officiate independently at appropriate meets.

The whole process is designed to be low-pressure and encouraging — ideal for first-time helpers.
