Newark Swimming Club

Squad Information Booklet

An inclusive pathway across five squads, matching training to each swimmer’s stage of development, goals, and journey in the water.

Newark Swimming Club – Squad System

Our club is split into 5 main squads, each matched to a different stage of a swimmer’s development and journey.

The squad system is designed to be inclusive to all members and to support them in achieving their goals. It allows flexibility in the number of sessions and will help swimmers increase their fitness and improve their skills. There is no expectation or pressure for swimmers to compete, but plenty of opportunities and support will be provided for swimmers that are interested in doing so.

This booklet contains a description of each squad, available sessions, and a comprehensive set of progressive aims to produce well-rounded and skilled swimmers — swimmers who are set up to swim well for life and who are ready to compete if they choose. All criteria should be achieved for a swimmer to move up to the next group either in training or competition, although exceptions can be made on an individual basis at the discretion of the Head Coach. At the end of the booklet is a description of other factors that influence squad movement.

Factors Influencing Squad Movements

A combination of the list below is used when moving swimmers from squad to squad and all moves are considered on an individual basis.

  • Technique — all 4 strokes, starts, turns and finishes.
  • Attendance — how many sessions per week a swimmer trains and how often they attend the sessions they are listed for.
  • Speed — the speed at which a swimmer can train and race.
  • Effort levels — how committed a swimmer is to both the technical elements of training and to the more physically demanding sessions.
  • Chronological Age — are they training in a group where most swimmers are of a similar age?
  • Biological Age — are they mentally and physically mature enough to cope with the next level of training?
  • Ambitions / goals — does a swimmer want to compete and progress their swimming to a higher level, or are they swimming to support another sport or for fitness?
