Newark Swimming Club Learn-to-Swim

Our learn to swim caters for children from age 6 upwards who already have basic aquatic skills, can float on their front and back and can swim at least 25m on their front and back. We have 2 time slots sessions, both of which run on a Thursday night. Lessons run for 48 weeks of the year with 2 weeks off for Christmas and 2 weeks off in the Summer. Newark Swimming Club is proud to follow the Swim England Learn-to-Swim Framework.

There are several different learn to swim frameworks in use around Newark. Here’s a rough guide to show which ones are equivalent to each other.

18.45 – 19.30pm

We have up to 3 different groups currently running, each with their own teacher and a maximum of 6 swimmers per group. Swimmers will practice Front Crawl and Back Crawl with arms, legs and breathing, develop a strong Butterfly and Breaststroke leg kick and improve/learn skills such as swimming underwater, push and glides and jumping in.

To move to the 7.30pm slot swimmers must complete all elements of Swim England Stage 4 and be able to swim 2 lengths of the teaching pool without stopping, in both Front Crawl and Back Crawl.

19.30pm – 20.15pm

We have 3 different lanes in this group, although swimmers may be in different lanes each week depending on the stroke/skill we are working on and the subsequent support they may require. This group spends 30 minutes in the small pool and the last 15 minutes each week in the main pool to help prepare them for moving up to the next group.

We will cover arms and breathing for all 4 strokes as well as introducing competitive skills such as diving and turns. Swimmers will also cover safe entries, treading water and other water safety skills as part of the time they spend in the main pool.

To move up to the main pool and into Skills Squad swimmers must demonstrate push and glides; be able to swim 25m of all strokes except Butterfly (12.5m) and be able to safely dive in from the side
